When people think of photoshoot locations, cemeteries might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But here in New England, our historic garden cemeteries offer some of the most beautiful, peaceful, and underrated backdrops for a photoshoot. These cemeteries were designed not just as places of rest but as public parks—landscaped spaces meant for strolling, reflection, and even picnicking! And with their stunning architecture, ivy-covered walls, old stone benches, and rolling hills, they create a setting that feels straight out of a gothic fairytale.

Of course, photographing in a cemetery requires respect for the space, but when done with care, it can result in some of the most breathtaking and atmospheric images imaginable.

A Little History of New England’s Historic Garden Cemeteries

In the 19th century, urban cemeteries began to evolve from simple burial grounds into beautifully designed landscapes. Known as garden cemeteries, these spaces were carefully planned with winding paths, towering trees, ornate mausoleums, and grand sculptures. Unlike modern cemeteries, which are often flat and uniform, garden cemeteries were created to be experienced. They were places where families could spend time outdoors, take in nature, and honor their loved ones in a setting that felt peaceful and alive.

Laurel Hill Cemetery – Saco, Maine

This is one of my favorite spots for a photoshoot, and one of the locations my clients choose most often! Located along the Saco River, Laurel Hill Cemetery features picturesque tree-lined pathways, a beautiful ivy covered chapel, and in the spring, one of the most stunning fields of daffodils I have ever seen. There’s a peacefulness to the space that makes it feel like stepping into a forgotten fairytale.

Mount Hope Cemetery – Bangor, Maine

Mount Hope is the second-oldest garden cemetery in the United States and easily one of the most visually stunning. With its rolling hills, winding roads, and striking gothic mausoleums, it feels like something straight out of a Victorian novel. The cemetery’s varied landscape includes stone bridges, quiet ponds, and dramatic staircases, all of which make for breathtaking photos.

Evergreen Cemetery – Portland, Maine

Evergreen Cemetery is one of the largest and most well-known cemeteries in Maine. It has everything—dense wooded paths, reflective ponds, historic chapels, and beautiful stonework. Make sure to pay attention to the closing time if you drive in, I got locked in at night one time and waited almost an hour until the police came to let me out!
